I mentioned in "Inexpensive HiFi System -ongoing" about the Dayens Ampino integrated amplifier. Although this is a report about a USB DAC, I kindly suggest again to order an Ampino. Anyone who is serious about 'sound' playback should have one. More and more I believe that it rivals amplifiers costing ten times as much. Maybe not in all disciplines, but so many and in its own beguiling way, without 'falsity', that I continue to be amazed. This is not "flash-in-th-pan!"
That is just the same as with the MUSIC Streamer+ from HRT too.
I have already said it all.
For 'silly money' some guys (this time not in Serbia), in the USA came up with a 'sound card' -like product for USB-connectivity to permit unquestionable High End sound from the digital [music] stream.
The price is 340 EURO and I heard that it is exceptionally similar to one used in a truly High End DAC from a company named 'Ayre,' (finest pedigree), that costs nine times as much. The HRT-guys are two of the first fifty of an international group of computer nerds, computer geeks, who devised and wrote such codes like: DVD.
Ironic is that the unit is imported by the guy who used to import Klipsch and Infinity (names some of us men know...). He was a pioneer thirty years ago - and is one now. Nobody is listening to this DAC!!!!! Buy one for your kids for Christmas if you want them to have 'good' ears later on. Actually, maybe it will be the kids who'll grasp this product before us grownups. Do what you will. It is worth nine times its asking price, imo, an that is quite a lot of money for a DAC... (I used to have my eye on a 'streamer' for $4.500 but hurray!, no longer)

I was looking for a system to act as music server (with which I could use my HRT Music Streamer+ with my stereo system) and a nice IT expert in the States just turned me on to this... a so-called NAS.

As I am not an IT expert, this appears to be a very viable (and reasonable) answer for ripping music into FLAC (this is the lossless method for 100% musical integrity, 1:1 copy and playback of the original CD/digital radio/video/etc.). You will need a dedicated PC, notebook or netbook if you want ease-of-use and to view cover art, e.g. Set up time for building your own private music juke box 'server' is 15 minutes...
On the Vortexbox homepage look under 'documentation' for most FAQs and then read through the 'forum' should any technical question still be unanswered.
Note that this is an open frame project so if you don't mind, link to e.g., Amazon through them so they can make some cash.
As best as I can determine, if you have an obsolete PC/laptop available (you can always buy a used one for EUR 50) you can start playing streamed music for well under EUR 500 and 'high end' (with the HRT Streamer+) for a lot less than EUR 1k. And this includes hard drive storage for 3,000 CDs; should be enough for starters!

I still haven't gone further than buying an Entrq USB cable and the HRT Music Streamer+ as, I was wisely informed years ago by one of my mentors, before you start a system make sure it is good because changing it later, well no, you shouldn't. Or something like that.
Maybe I locate a refurbished Mac to work with, whatever.
Don't forget that you read about the HRT Streamer+ from me first (okay, a little egotistical pride is hopefully not too harmful), but here is Stereophile's write up...
